One Day

One day we will be back together

We will reconcile

I will have apologized for crossing her boundaries

I will have apologized for showing her brother more love and making her feel less important

I will have apologized for gossiping to my friends about her and her life

I will have apologized for every way that I let her down

I will have apologized for trying too hard

I will have apologized for apologizing

She will accept my apologies

and come to visit me

……..with trepidation

She will wait for me to say something nasty about her dad

She will wait for me to criticize her boyfriend

She will wait for me to cross a boundary

She will wait to feel unloved

Very, very slowly she will become comfortable with me

One minute

One moment

One hour

One day

Maybe even one week and

Then….

One day

when we are sitting on the beach and her sun streaked hair is dangling in her eyes she will say…

“I’m sorry mom”

It will be a low almost imperceptible whisper

But I will hear it

And without me saying a word she will know

– it’s ok
